Brrrr…12 below out there today. Okay, so I got a little excited about the days of sunshine and the break in the cold…got a bit of spring fever and a bit overzealous. Not the first time I’ve been overexcited about something, as some of you are aware. ;-)
I learned something, however that I want to share. When we had that thaw, I heard the melting snow from my roof running down the rain gutter next to my door and wondered if my rain barrel was collecting runoff on the other side of the house. I eagerly checked it out and opened the overflow fitting. Water poured out!
I was very excited that I’d already collected a full barrel of thawed snow for spring…then it hit me! It”s not spring!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to empty my rain barrel so it didn’t freeze and split when the weather changed again.
Even though the spigot was open, I had it hooked up to a hose that had frozen. So, I hooked a different hose up to the spigot and ran it out to my pine trees that had wanted moisture so badly this past dry summer. It ran freely and I felt good about watering those big pines. Now I can excitedly wait for a real spring thaw that I can keep the saved harvest.
What I would like to showcase is a young lady, still in college, who received my first sale of a plain barrel from her dad, who bought it for her as a Christmas gift in order that she (yes, SHE) could make this into a wine cabinet for her fiance’ as a Christmas gift.
She was confident and held fast that she was going to do the work, as this was going to be her gift to her fiance’ and it could only be her gift to him if she did the work. I was happy to receive pictures of the finished product and I think she’d be proud to have them shown here.
Great job, Elise! Way to go girl, you set the bar high for the rest of us. Meanwhile folks, stay warm and wait for those thaws! It is right around the corner...really.
